WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH RUSSIA?, and THE BLACKLISTING OF GARY NULL FROM PACIFICA RADIO STATIONS

Mitchel Cohen digs deep into the U.S. response to the country Georgia’s bombardment of South Ossetia. Drawing on reports by Seumas Milne in the Guardian (UK), by Mikhail Gorbachev in the Washington Post, Robert Knight on KPFK’s Flashpoints, Bruce Gagnon of the Global Network against Weapons and Nuclear Power, and Ellen Brown (WebofDebt.com), Mitchel is scathing in attacking the lies and “nauseating hypocrisy” of U.S. politicians and media.

and, in the second half of the show, health expert GARY NULL responds to attacks on his health advice that led to him being blacklisted from Pacifica station WPFW in Washington D.C. This is Part One of a 3-Part segment on this important issue.

What’s behind the current economic crisis, and what to do about it?

This week on “Steal This Radio,” Southern California attorney and author Ellen Brown (WebOfDebt.com) and Mitchel Cohen get into a lively discussion, joined by Shaune Velazquez. Ellen Brown sees the book “The Wizard of Oz” as historical commentary on U.S. monetary policy, and along the way examines how to fight housing foreclosures, JP Morgan’s confiscation of Bear Stearns (with the assistance of the Federal Reserve), and other related matters.

Ellen Brown’s essays are available at www.webofdebt.com . You can also order her fascinating book, Web of Debt, at that site.

Music:
- Songs from the Wizard of Oz, including (of course!) “Over the Rainbow,” sung by Judy Garland, and
- Ray Bolger: “If I Only Had a Brain”
- ABBA: “Money Money Money”
- Dave Lippman: “Big Oil Drum”
- John Mellencamp: “Rain on the Scarecrow”
- Bruce Springsteen: “Pay Me My Money Down”

The show is broadcast over the internet on Thursday, July 31 at 11 a.m. and repeated next Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. on www.tribecaradio.net . Click on “Listen Live”.

Part 2

Mitch Cohens Amazing interview with South African Activist and Poet Dennis Brutus continues.  Recording engineer Shaune Velazquez asks some tough questions of the two activists in regard to their ideas on some of the differences between Capitalism and Socialism.  Can Capitalism work at all?  Is it greed or capitalism that is the problem?  Can Socialism work or is the answer  maybe “a combination of regulated capital and with the emphasis on a society fabric built on social values”?

But this show is much more than just the answer to a couple of questions because the life of Dennis Brutus is absolutely fascinating.  The work that he has done and the sacrifices he has made can only be likened to our great American leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Medgar Evars and all those who struggled for the equality of all people and all races.  At the ripe age of 84 Dennis Brutus is committed to and continues to peacefully fight hard for justice and civil rights.

Show #48

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

This week Mitch Cohen and Shaune V pay tribute to the legendary comedian Goerge Carlin. If you have listened to Goerge Carlin you know that he said the things that people are scared to say but he did in a way that made people laugh. Goerge Carlin was an individual and included within his comedy acts political satire that made us laugh and question who we are as Americans and he brought together the things we have in common more so than our differences. We would like to thank Amy Goodman and Democracy Now since we are taking some clips from their show that aired in the wake of Mr. Carlins death. We will miss Goerge Carlin tremendously and may his essence stay in our hearts.

Please enjoy this weeks show.

Peace

This week, Mitchel reads the first half of “The Secret Bailout of J.P. Morgan: How Insider Trading Looted Bear Stearns and the American Taxpayer”, an extremely informative article by Ellen Brown, http://www.webofdebt.com/articles/banking-bailout.php , which holds that far from “rescuing” Bear Stearns, J.P. Morgan Chase — one of the largest banks in the world — had a hand in intentionally sinking Bear Stearns’ stock and STOLE that company with the help of a $55 billion loan from the Federal Reserve. But before that, Mitchel discusses the news items, below.

To immediately hear the show scroll down and hit the play button on the left.
GUEST: Chris Kinder, coordinator of The Labor Action Committee to Free Mumia Abu-Jamal
<http://www.laboractionmumia.org”

TOPIC: The Frame-Up of Mumia Abu-Jamal: The Real Story.

Mumia Abu-Jamal is a journalist and former Black Panther who was found guilty of killing Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner in 1981 and who is facing state execution. He has remained on Death Row in Pennsylvania for the last 26 years. Mumia said he was parked in his cab when he “heard what sounded like gunshots.” He ran over to the scene and was shot by a cop. He has always maintained his innocence, and never “confessed.” Witness William Singletary saw the whole thing; he said that Mumia arrived unarmed, and only AFTER the cop was shot; he said the real killer fled the scene. Other witnesses corroborated this account. Mumia Abu-Jamal arrived on the scene and was shot by cops and almost died. Evidence shows that the cops present at the scene knew Mumia and didn’t like his articles exposing of their crimes and brutality.
His case has become a cause cêlebre around the world, as Mumia is a brilliant political analyst and supporter of radical progressive movements. His case is a symbol of the racist frameups that were rampant in the U.S. in the 1970s and 80s, and that in fact continue to this day.
In this show, Chris Kinder examines the evidence for Mumia’s innocence and looks at a new book, “The Framing of Mumia Abu-Jamal,” by J. Patrick O’Connor which is the first book to convincingly show how the Philadelphia Police Department and the District Attorney’s office worked in tandem to efficiently and methodically frame him.

Beth Youhn joins us near the end to discuss the importance of the Longshore Workers’ May Day port shutdown against the war in Iraq.
