Show #48

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

This week Mitch Cohen and Shaune V pay tribute to the legendary comedian Goerge Carlin. If you have listened to Goerge Carlin you know that he said the things that people are scared to say but he did in a way that made people laugh. Goerge Carlin was an individual and included within his comedy acts political satire that made us laugh and question who we are as Americans and he brought together the things we have in common more so than our differences. We would like to thank Amy Goodman and Democracy Now since we are taking some clips from their show that aired in the wake of Mr. Carlins death. We will miss Goerge Carlin tremendously and may his essence stay in our hearts.

Please enjoy this weeks show.

Peace

and

THE LAURA THOMAS BAND- a New York group with a sound like no one else in the industry. With lead singer Laura Thomas. The LTB combines the power of rock and funk with probing lyrics and emotional songwriting. The Village Voice recently praised Laura for her ‘thick-skinned song-poems in jazzoid rhythms.’ The Washington Post said that ‘Her voice is capable of tracing melodies as sinuous as rock Creek Parkway, and she has a soft spot for writing tender, compasssionate or introspective ballads that help set her apart from the rant’n'roll crowd.’ In NYC they have appreared at The Knitting Factory, Mercury Lounge, and Joe’s Pub to name a few. www.laurathomasband.com.

Food-as-History/Desserts as Edible-Art

What better way to study history and to travel, then by its food? This week, foodies Susan and Catherine take Let’s Travel! listeners on a culinary tour of the world with Cathy K. Kaufman, professional chef, author and culinary historian and Eric Bedoucha, executive pastry chef and Co-Owner of Financier Patisserie in New York City.  You’ll learn how you can travel inexpensively by sampling the foods of different countries and what food tells us about us, an age, a country, a civilization? We’ll also discuss other “hot topics” such as the current food crisis, shortages, the extremes - too much food, too much of the “wrong foods” vs. too little food, Global Warming, etc. You’ll also hear about what Eric learned from the various cultures he lived in and how he incorporated that into his baking and business.  So sit back and indulge.

Guests:

Cathy K. Kaufman, Chairperson of The Culinary Historians of New York, (CHNY), http://www.culinaryhistoriansny.org/
Eric Bedoucha, Executive Pastry Chef and Co-Owner of Financier Patisserie, http://www.financierpastries.com/
